Ser vs Estar
Spanish and Portuguese distinguish two verbs often translated as be. Ser generally identifies or classifies a subject, while estar often describes a state or location; this is not simply a permanent-versus-temporary distinction. Examples: Ana es médica / Ana é médica and Ana está cansada.
